It's probably my GOTY so far (certainly miles better than anything Sony or MS have put out for their "new" consoles) but as a Zelda game it's a bit mid. I found the best parts of the game to be the story, temples, shrines, and bosses, while most of the open world stuff felt a bit too superfluous (and I really wasn't a fan of the armor system, mainly because they almost go out of their way to make sure you don't get or use Link's classic tunic I like how armor use is emphasized based on the environment but, dammit, treat the classic green tunic, fairy bow, and the Hylian shield with the same love as the Master Sword and make them the best gear in their respective slots, no upgrading required or degradation to worry about!). I'd even gotten to the point where I was straight up skipping combat, even on my first try, because it was just so tedious not just killing things but then having to farm weapons or find ingredients again. As I said, I didn't even interact with some of the systems in the game because it was just too tedious. I really think the game would be a bit better if there was a little bit more focus to it. I've got better feelings on TOTK than I do BOTW but after beating it I return to my same complaints:Īs a video game, it's stellar. Ganon was actually a bit of a challenge at the end, though to be fair I didn't upgrade a single piece of armor (screw farming star pieces in the open world, I don't got time for that lol) or really focus on cooking at all (didn't even bother with it really, outside of making meat/fish skewers, until that fight).
